It all started when Taylor Swift came to band rehearsal after going through a bad post -breakup. She sat down and started playing guitar, just four simple chords. Eventually, the rest of the band joined in and she started ad-libbing everything that she was feeling at the time. The song got more and more intense with every chord and lasted for ten minutes straight before moving onto regular practice. This was how Swift’s ten minute feature song, “All Too Well (10 Minute Version),” from her new album, Red (Taylor’s Version) came to be. Red (Taylor’s Version) is a re-recording of Swift’s 2012 album, Red. It consists of 30 tracks, including 20 songs from the original album, the ten- minute unabridged version of the song “All Too Well,” and her own renditions of “Better Man” and “Babe,” which she hadoriginallygivenofftothe country bands Little Big Town and Sugarland. The album was released on November 12, 2021 through Republic Records. Although the album may be a re-recording of her previous album, it has garnered praise by fans and critics alike. “Red (Taylor’s Version) may be a commercial endeavor first, but that doesn’t mean it lacks an underlying artistic statement: that sometimes we must revisit our past, both the flattering and the less flattering bits, in order to get to the future,” Olivia Horn, Pitchfork writer and reviewer, said. This album is the second of six albums Swift intends on re-recording as a way to regain ownership of her firstsix studio albums. This is due to businessman Scooter Braun and his company Ithaca Holdings acquired rights to Big Machine in 2019, the company that managed all of Swift’s first six studio albums. Swift denounced Braun’s ownership and stated that she would re-record all of these albums to gain back her rights. Although Swift may have lost her ownership to the original albums, she does find positives in being able to re-record them, one of them being the opportunity to finally release songs that did not make it into the original albums. “I’ve been going through the process of re-recording my older music, and in the process, I have dug up these songs that I wrote along the way that didn’t make the album because I thought, ‘I wanna save these for the next album,’ but then the next album would be a completely different thing,” Swift said, “What I’m really excited about is that people will be able to hear these songs that no one’s ever heard before that were supposed to be on that album.” Swift’s new album is already record-breaking. Since its release, the song “All Too Well (10 minute version)” has broken the record for the longest song to top the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the United States. It has also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland and the United Kingdom. Following the release of the song, “All Too Well (10 Minute Version),” Swift also released a short film starring Stranger Things actor Sadie Sink and Teen Wolf actor Dylan O’Brien, which raked up millions of views on YouTube. Swift’s new album can be listened to on Amazon Music, Apple Music and Spotify. Physical versions will also be released on CD, vinyl and special-edition sets
