This is not the first district swimming championship for the Washington Warriors. In fact, it is their 53rd year in a row winning the district title.
Washington won eight of the eleven events during the district swimming meet on Saturday, February 6 at the Linn-Mar Aquatic Center in Marion, Iowa. Xavier sophomore George Durin qualified for the Warriors at the district meet.
“I swim in four different events and I really want to make it to state in all of the events,” Durin said before the district meet. “I am a part of the 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay and the 100 freestyle.”
Durin followed through with his goals and was a district champion in all four events.
“In preparation for districts we used a training called taper, which is when you shorten the yardage and add more rest,” Durin said. “That really helped me prepare for this meet.”
In addition, senior Mitchell Anderson will also be participating as a member of the 200 freestyle relay.
“I’m really excited because it is my senior year and I get to swim with my teammates one last time,” Anderson said.
Washington finished the meet with a total of 421 points.
The state meet is Saturday, February 13 at the Marshalltown YMCA.
