The ultimate fight and sacrifice

Over one million people. Six branches. One common goal.

Each year on November 11, the United States celebrates Veterans Day. This day is observed to recognize the service and sacrifice of men and women who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Along with over one million people on active duty across the country, there are also around 20 Xavier alumni who have or are serving the country as well. Nicholas Jakel (X18), who serves in the United States Air Force, and Ryer Barnes (X17), who serves in the United States Army, are just two examples of that.

Tabby Barnes, mother of Ryer Barnes, said that serving in the United States Armed Forces was strongly encouraged for Ryer, as there is a long line of service in their family, including Tabby herself, who served in the National Guard.

Even though soldiers like Jakel and Barnes are trained to handle tough situations, it is important to acknowledge and remember the support they need, too.

“It takes strength, courage, perseverance, tenacity and a tight family to support them. Depending on what their position is, they can go through some trying, grueling, scary and also uplifting experiences,” Christiane Fields, mother of Nicholas Jakel, said. “They need their family more than anything; they need to know they are loved, supported and doing what they do for good reason. Fear and courage go hand in hand everyday for them. We need to let them know they are never alone, that we all value what they are working for and how hard, challenging and trying it can be on them.”

Despite the ups and downs this career may bring, many argue it is quite rewarding and encourage others to serve.

“Absolutely do it. I think it is great to serve our country, and I think if you are not sure what you want to do with life, too, there are so many opportunities—it is such a great thing to do,” T. Barnes said.

On this Veterans Day, celebrate not only all of the soldiers who have served or serve the country, but acknowledge people in the Xavier community and the Cedar Rapids area who have chosen this career. These men and women are fighting the ultimate fight—the fight for strength, freedom and opportunity for all.
