Team John Ambrose

As many of you may know,Netflix recently released a much anticipated sequel to the movie “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” and so the controversial question began. Similar to “Twilight” and “The Vampire Diaries”, people began arguing about which love interest best suited the main character, Lara Jean. Was it the popular, caring, jock Peter Kavinsky, or the sweet and genuine boy-next-door, John Ambrose McClaren? For me, the answer is simple: John Ambrose would make a better boyfriend.

For starters, Lara Jean and Peter’s relationship started because of a lie. They began fake dating to make Peter’s ex-girlfriend jealous and want him back. But then of course, because it’s a book and movie, they fell in love by accident. But a relationship with a foundation of lies will consist of nothing but lies. Some people may argue that their fake dating and then falling in love is what makes their relationship so romantic. He clearly still loves his ex-girlfriend, though, and proves that throughout the movie by continuing being friends with her and hiding their relationship from Lara Jean. They say some part of you will always have feelings for your first love and Peter is still in love with his ex, Gen, even though he is dating Lara Jean. Throughout Peter and Lara Jean’s real relationship, Peter and Gen would still talk every night on the phone and he would rush to her side if she needed him for anything.

When he was with Lara Jean, he wouldn’t hesitate before taking the last slice of pizza without being polite and asking if anyone else wants it. He is only concerned with himself, unable to love anyone else.

Now, John Ambrose is a completely different person. He is sweet and notices small things that no one else pays attention to. Lara Jean and John Ambrose also have similar hobbies versus Peter who likes to party when Lara Jean would rather be home watching TV or baking. At a Valentine’s Day party, Peter completely abandons Lara Jean to play a game. Did I mention this was on Valentine’s Day? John Ambrose would never do that. He would plan something totally romantic specifically tailored to Lara Jean and what she likes to do.

They also have history. Both of them liked each other in 6th grade, but the one time John Ambrose was going to ask Lara Jean out, he got scared and never did. John Ambrose cares about Lara Jean much more than Peter does. He accepts that she is with Peter, but is still there for her as a friend because he cares so much. When everything is said and done, John Ambrose is better for Lara Jean because he puts her above everything else. He puts her first in everything and wouldn’t eat the last slice of pizza.
