We Beefin’?

If there is one company that knows how to use internet trends to gain attention from teenagers, it is the fast food chain Wendy’s. Usually known for their never-frozen, square patties, Wendy’s has been gaining popularity over the past year with their Twitter account ran by interns, on which they respond to a lot of tweets with clever and snarky comebacks, usually poking fun at other fast food restaurants. Banking off their new “hip” brand, they have now ventured into the world of hip-hop with the release of a promotional rap project titled, We Beefin’? under the moniker At Wendy’s.

They chose to use a female vocalist for the five-song EP due to the face of the company being the iconic red-headed girl. This was a nice touch, as I was expecting a generic male vocalist. However, it is still a very dull example of the “trap” sub-genre, which I assume they chose due to its current popularity. This project was never intended to be serious; it was just Wendy’s using a trend to gain more publicity. Basically, this EP was just Wendy’s showing they know what the kids are into these days. There is nothing wrong with that, I just do not think it is funny enough to justify the uninspired songs.

I will say this definitely could have been way worse. It sounds like a studio release and is worth listening through once, but there is absolutely no reason to listen to these gimmicky songs more than once. The interns who made this are not professional musicians, and I give them credit for making it sound professional. That being said, I did not enjoy listening. It does not take long to realize the songs are just basic filler lyrics over very generic trap beats. Every song uses an unoriginal flow and a catchy, bland hook. It is less of an EP and more of a clever marketing idea. However, since they put it on Spotify I am judging We Beefin’? for its music, not its gimmick. Not serious enough to be legitimate, not funny enough to be a joke. It doesn’t have the beef, 3/10.
