The Xavier boys’ and girls’ bowling seasons have started up, and the Saints are returning some experienced upperclassmen. Seniors Jackson Schuster, Michael Buenzow, and Jacob Fulton are returning to the boys’ team, and senior Tanya Zaugg and junior Katie Langholz return to the girls’.

Fulton has already set goals for this upcoming season. “I want to go back to state and also qualify as a team,” Fulton said. “Our team’s ultimate goal is to qualify and win state this year.”

Zaugg is one of the top bowlers for the girls’ team. She has bowled varsity for the last four years. “As soon as I joined the team, my goal was to remain a varsity anchor for all four years,” Zaugg said. “Since this is my last year, I feel like I’ve accomplished that goal perfectly.”

Zaugg has done a lot to prepare in the off-season.

“During the offseason, I am in a Saturday morning bowling league at Lancer Lanes and I also bowl in summer tournaments,” Zaugg said.

Coach Camacho has been the head coach for the last 15 years for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.

“Coach Camacho has always been pretty strict, but he’s also an amazing coach,” Zaugg said.

“He knows everyone’s bowling style and knows exactly what they need to do to get a better score,” Zaugg said. “He works with everyone that needs it and makes sure no one is left without any advice or help.”

The boys’ and girls’ teams competed on December 9 at Colonial Lanes against Iowa City High. The boys’ team won the meet against Iowa City High with a high score of 2,724 to Iowa City High’s score 2614. The Saints’ top bowler of the meet was Buenzow with scores of 181 and 208, respectively.

The girls’ team also won their meet with an overall score of 2336 compared to Iowa City High’s score of 1762. The top girls’ bowler was junior Katie Langholz with scores of 188 and 173 with a total score of 361 respectively.

The Saints’ most recent meet was against Cedar Rapids Prairie at May City Bowl. The boys’ and girls’ bowling teams compete again on January 3 in a meet against Dubuque Wahlert at May City Bowl.
