Don’t be Red Velvet

Nick Drahozal, Opinion Editor

One of the most debated debacles in cake history is the existence of the red velvet cake flavor. Whatever your standing may be on this riveting a r g u m e n t , know that a typical red velvet cake is just chocolate cake dyed red by an ostentatious person. How dare anyone try to impose that a chocolate cake dyed red is better than the original. Red velvet is the most pretentious cupcake ever created. It’s pretending to be something it’s not. It’s just as delicious as a regular chocolate cupcake, it doesn’t need all of the extra flare and pizzazz.

If you have ever had a red velvet cupcake, you probably thought that you were posh, elegant, and better than everyone else. Well, I’m going to tell you that you are not as elegant as you may think. This inadequate cupcake changes your perception of yourself. Why be pretentious when you can be original? Be the original person that you were created to be. Each and every one of us has our own personality, look, and sense of purpose. Changing who I am would be like becoming the red velvet cupcake I despise. I am not true to myself when I am red velvet.

The amount of times I should have been chocolate but chose to be red velvet is embarrassing. The idea of red velvet seemed so important at the time, but being original is what matters. I needed all the extra flare and additions in order to feel good about myself. I wanted to feel more important than all of the other chocolates out there. I was not being who I truly am. In the end, I will always be a proud chocolate who doesn’t let others influence my life choices.

Finding my true flavor has taken time and effort. I am proud to say all the time I have spent being a red velvet has helped me embrace my chocolate. I hope through this analogy, you can see that in order to truly become yourself, you need to embrace your true self. Don’t be a red velvet. Be the proud chocolate you are meant to be.
