Finessing the flusher

Tim Globokar, Opinion Writer

One of the most frustrating things in the modern world is when a hands-free, automatic flushing toilet prematurely flushes, leaving people everywhere with a wet rear and a mood killed. Not only are these “toilet time bombs” inconvenient when being used, they are also extremely difficult to clean. There is no reason for businesses or schools to install automatic flushing toilets in the modern day. Hands free toilets are useless.

One thing is certain, no one knows how they work. “Apparently” they send infrared signals back and forth. When the signal is interrupted, the flusher primes then flushes. However, this system is clearly flawed. It is a daily occurrence for someone to merely walk in front of the flusher’s sensor and trigger it. This flaw can scar children for life. As a young child, I refused to use automatic flushing toilets under any circumstances. It came to the point where I would even pee my pants and cry hysterically. These toilets are not child friendly.

One of the main reasons not to install automatic toilets is the high price. According to HomeAdvisor.com, the average toilet costs around 300 dollars to install. Buying just a few toilets for each bathroom can quickly become pricey. The added cost for a basic automatic flushing system is around 400 dollars per toilet. It does not make sense to spend thousands of dollars on a system that causes anger, fear, and inconvenience.

Finally, the inconsistent sensors make it extremely difficult to properly clean the inside of the bowl. Why would one buy an expensive, annoying toilet that is hard to clean? First off, if the toilet clogs, it will keep flushing when you try to unplug it, unless, you have ninja like skills. Even just routine cleaning is inconvinced by the constant flushing of these fecal failures.

Some may argue that hands-free toilets improve sanitary conditions in bathrooms. However, there is a simple solution: Wash your hands! The laziness in our culture has encouraged this idea of inconveniencing oneself in order to do less work. Take sixty seconds out of the day to wash your hands and the problem is solved. The high cost and inconvenience to oneself and to others makes motion sensor toilets unreasonable. Forget the automatic flushers.
