Every year, Xavier students contribute to an Angel Giving Tree that sponsors less fortunate children from around Cedar Rapids. There are small trees located outside of the Xavier chapel that have been decorated with small cards. These cards include the gender, age, and wish list of the receiver. Campus Ministry is responsible for this tradition at Xavier.
“Christmas is not only about giving, but bringing Christ’s presence and love, with the opportunity to give to those who cannot give to others,” Father Dustin Vu said. “We are the fortunate ones who proclaim the message of the Gospel.”
Senior McKenna Andersen participates in this tradition every year.
“I enjoy doing the Angel Tree because giving back to those who cannot afford gifts is extremely important during the Christmas season,” Andersen said. “Last year I sponsored a girl who asked for a haircut, which really put into perspective how much the people of our community struggle.”
Each gift requested is sent to a child at The Tanager Place located in Cedar Rapids. The Tanager Place is for children and families who cope with mental and behavioral health challenges. The desired gifts range anywhere from Barbie dolls to pens and pencils.
Presents are expected to be delivered in time for Christmas.
