There’s a certain rush of adrenaline I feel every Friday night when the football players run onto the field. As they break through that banner, our student section begins uproaring. We scream different vowels for long periods of time while the front row bangs on the fence in front of them. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t understand the point of being in the student section at a football game and not cheering your heart out.

As a senior in the student section this year, I want to “go out with a bang”. Therefore, I will be cheering for our boys of fall until I lose my voice and dressing out to the fullest for every theme with all of my friends. These moments will become my favorite memories of high school. I always find it sad when I glance back and see people on their phones, sitting down, and not even watching the game. No one makes any memories staring at a screen all day. Look up, stand up, and have fun with your peers.

Several times throughout the game, seniors will scream, “FRESHMEN CHEER!” When the upperclassmen yell this, we don’t want to pick on the freshmen. We want them to stop gossiping about who’s dating who and start making memories that they will cherish forever. Not long from now, they will be the seniors wishing they could do it all over again. Flashback to three years ago when I was a freshman getting screamed at by senior girls to cheer louder. Although at the time I was deathly afraid of them, I would now like to thank them for making my freshman year unforgettable. I distinctly remember during the Championship game in 2012, a senior girl walked up to the freshman area and said, “If those were your boys out on that field, you would be cheering until your throats bleed”. I’ve been taking this to heart lately because it is 100% true. There’s something about watching the boys I’ve grown up with play a sport they love for the last time that makes me pretty emotional. However, it shouldn’t be just the junior and senior classes who feel this way because we are all one “Xavier Nation”. That’s why at tomorrow’s game and the games thereon, I want every single person in the student section cheering louder than ever before because one night, it will be our last. Let’s make this year legendary!
