To my 3A TA class

Grace Ries, Editor-In-Chief

The first day I walked into class, you guys looked at me like I was the weirdest person ever. I tried to make a joke and no one laughed, so I got scared that no one would like me. It was a good thing my friend Liz McGarvey, another TA, was there because, otherwise, it was going to be a long semester. As a TA, it can be difficult not having tons of friends in the same class. It’s not like I could just walk up to a sophomore and say, “Oh my gosh, isn’t the AP Calculus homework impossible?” You guys would look at me like I’m insane.

As we had more classes, you all started to warm up to me. You talked to me a little bit at a time, asking me to edit your articles, complimenting my shoes and playing hangman with Liz and I in the last few minutes of class. When I realized you knew who Morgan Wallen was, I knew for a fact that we were going to get along just fine.

Flash forward to a couple weeks ago when I couldn’t stop laughing while talking to you guys about Valentine’s Day BuzzFeed quizzes. Or which Disney prince we were going to end up with, you guys know who you are. (Shout out to the people who helped me figure out which Disney princess I am).

Now, I can’t wait to go to 3A and hang out with you guys. You aren’t scared to ask me questions about InDesign, like how to make a text box or text wrap a picture. Or even how to do a cutout in Photoshop. And you’ve made me laugh harder than I usually make myself laugh by deleting the wrong part of a cutout and freaking out instantly, or forgetting how to create a picture box when adding a picture to InDesign. You instantly laugh along when you realize it’s the littlest mistake.

It still makes me nervous when I help you guys with design seeds or using the eyedropper tool because sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing. Luckily, I have Mrs. Augustine and Liz to help me out in class. But, it still takes a lot to be a TA. I have to be reliable and that can be scary at times because I don’t want to make any mistakes and I don’t want to let you guys down.

Regardless, all of you should consider being TAs. Even if you don’t think teaching seems like the most enjoyable thing, you get to meet new people and learn new things, like how to help other people and how to put yourself outside your comfort zone.

Thank you for giving me a class to look forward to and not hating me, hopefully. Next time we should cut me out and put me in a car instead of a shoe. Thoughts? We’ll talk next class. Thanks again for laughing with me and not at me.
