Fischer finds back of the net

Growing up, sports were always a big part of junior Nick Fischer’s life. As a multi-sport athlete, Fischer had to learn how to schedule time for practice in multiple activities. From baseball to soccer, he has learned many valuable lessons about giving his all to every sport.

“Playing in multiple sports helps me, but it also means I am really busy,” Fischer said. “I played in an indoor soccer league during the off season because I wanted to try and get some touches in before the season started.”

Without a lot of background in soccer, Fisher has found guidance from senior captain Andrija (Andrew) Mijatovic.

“Andrew has been like another coach to me on the field, giving me tips, and always helping me get better. He is a huge part of our team’s success,” Fischer said.

Mijatovic leads the team in scoring with ten goals and Fischer is the third leading scorer with five goals. Other than scoring, Fischer believes he brings a competitive edge to the team, and the boys’ head coach, Amir Hadzic agrees.

“Nick brings a ton of energy to practice, and he is always striving to get better,” Coach Hadzic said. “He is a great attacking threat and opposing teams find him uncomfortable to guard.”

Both Coach Hadzic and Fischer believe the team has a great chance at making it to state this season.

“We understand that working hard at practices and dedicating yourself to the team can take us a long way,” Hadzic said. “We can definitely compete to win state.”

“I think we have a great shot at state and the potential to do some damage at the end of May,” Fischer said. “I am really excited to see what this team can do the rest of the season.”

The Xavier boys’ soccer team will compete next on Friday, May 3 at home against Cedar Falls at 4:15 p.m.
