Keep the Oscars Hostless

Cody Clemenson, A&E Writer

Ah the Oscars, the night where Hollywood’s most elite come together to talk about movies they probably haven’t seen. A night filled with questionable award winners and great live performances. What’s not to look forward to? I enjoy film and try my hardest to see most of the Best Picture nominees, so I look forward to seeing if I can accurately predict who and what is going to win. However, no one in my family ever wants to watch the Oscars with me. You may ask “why?” They have no anticipation to watch it because of how long it takes and the constant bashing of political parties that take place during the prestigious award ceremony. That’s why this year’s Oscars was such a breath of fresh air. After the fallout with Kevin Hart’s old tweets which had resurfaced, the Oscars announced they would go hostless this year. I will admit even I was a bit worried how the show would go on without someone commandeering it. Surprisingly enough, the show flowed much better than I would’ve ever imagined. Without a host, we got to see more actors come out to present awards. Everyone from Chris Evans to Amy Poehler got stage time to deliver awards. No one tried to one up the host from the year before with even more antics and political hate speech. In fact, politics were hardly brought up at all this year. More time was focused on movies nominated for Best Picture and every song nominee got a spotlight before the winner was revealed. Also, more time was allotted for people to get up on stage and give their speeches when they won their respective awards. The change was beneficial and people noticed. A source from CNBC stated the viewership for the award show shot up 12% this year, which is the first time viewership has risen in five years. All of the changes this year were fantastic and I am excited to see what comes of the changes in the upcoming years. I can’t act like I know the most about movies, but the Oscars are something I will be excited to watch every year if they keep this change and remain hostless.
