Brought together by tragedy

Ninety-four birthdays, three children and four grandchildren. A husband, a father and an American hero.

On November 30, the 41st president of the United States, George H. W. Bush, passed away in Houston at the age of 94.

Proceeding his death, two memorial services were held. The first took place at the Washington National Cathedral on December 5, and a second at the Bush family church in Houston on December 6.

The first row at the Washington National Cathedral was occupied by current President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

Additionally, former Presidents Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were all in attendance with their wives, former First Ladies Michelle Obama, Rosalynn Carter and Hillary Clinton.

Regardless of any association with political parties, these eight individuals gathered together to mourn the passing of their friend.

George P. Bush, former President Bush’s eldest grandson, and James Baker, his Secretary of State and Chief of Staff, paid tribute to H.W. Bush at the service in Houston.

“George Herbert Walker Bush was the most gracious, most decent, most humble man that I will ever know,” George P. Bush said.

Known for foreign affairs, President George H. W. Bush was a man well versed in government bureaucracy. Although not elected to serve a second term, his legacy is that of an American hero.

A few of George H. W. Bush’s accomplishments include serving as a Congressman and Ambassador to China, as well as to the United Nations. Throughout his life he assumed the role as Director of the CIA, Vice President and President of the United States.

“So through our tears, let us see the blessings of knowing and loving you — a great and noble man, and the best father a son or daughter could have,” George W. Bush said in a tearful eulogy. “And in our grief, let us smile knowing that Dad is hugging Robin and holding Mom’s hand again.”

George H.W. Bush will be buried in his presidential library on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station Texas alongside his daughter Robin and wife Barbara.
