Senior captains lead the way

Leadership and responsibility are what it takes to be a captain. Over the summer, the boys’ golf team met and decided on its captains. A week before the season started, seniors Dan Bailey and Nick Recker were announced as leaders.

“It was great, because I knew I could contribute a lot to the team, including leadership,” Bailey said.

Bailey and Recker consider it a special honor to be named captains.

“I was proud of myself because I always looked up to our captains and now I get to be one,” Recker said.  “I hope my teammates look up to me.”

Although being named captain is a big honor, it comes with a lot of hard work.

“My role is to make sure everyone is representing Xavier the right way and to influence my teammates as a positive role model,” Bailey said.

With the leadership from Recker and Bailey, the Saints are hopeful for a top finish at State. However, the captains have a desire to lead the team in other ways besides golf.

“Nick and Dan are great role models for the team. They always are practicing and getting better. They help influence our team by having a good attitude even after bad rounds. They help us all get better on and off the course,” junior Wes Johnson said.

The Saints competed on Monday, September 24 at the Mississippi Divisional Meet at Gardner Golf Course. Recker led the Saints to a third place finish. The Saints competed on Tuesday, October 2 at Meadows Golf Course for a place at the state tournament on October 5 and 6.
