Find Mindfulness

Being mindful is an activity that I have subconsciously participated in for years. I was introduced to the trendy word only recently. While reflecting on my last year at Xavier and participating in many different lasts, I’ve realized the importance of being mindful of the places that we are in and the people that we are with. As a human, I tend to excessively worry over grades, planning events, the future, and just about everything else. One of the most helpful ways that I appreciate life and all its beauty is by taking time to pause and be mindful.

Even when going to class seems like the last thing I want to do, I’m constantly reminded of the blessing it is to get to see my friends every day. Whether it’s singing in choir, watching videos in French, chatting in newspaper, or literally doing math in Calculus, my classmates find ways to have fun in these routines. With graduation coming soon, I won’t take for granted the time I spent with friends every day.

I appreciate the moments spent with some of my best friends running cross country and track. While we are stretching in the grass with a slight breeze, the sun out, and the laughs of goofy sophomores in the background, I can’t help but appreciate where I am and who I am with. These girls have been my family for four years. The distance girls have been my biggest role models, and with this team I can truly be myself.

Next year, I will be going abroad. I will spend Thanksgiving, Christmas, and every other ordinary day 4,496 miles from my family. I know that a year from now I will be dying to hear my sisters running around the house, joke with my brother during car rides, or chat with my Mom and Dad long after dinner has ended. I love my big family. My life will be so different next year that I am taking the time to appreciate my happiness now. Take the time to gather your senses and be in the moment, because every second spent worrying is time gone by.
