Once a Saint, always a Saint. This saying holds true, once again, at the 2018 Alumni Hall of Fame ceremony held on Friday, January 26. The LaSalle-Regis-Xavier Alumni Association inducted William Martin (X07), Edward Shea (R75), Michael Winker (R83), and Bailey (Dorrington) Winter (X07). The inductees were made full members of the hall of fame during halftime of the Xavier vs. Cedar Rapids Washington boys’ varsity basketball game.

Martin was inducted for his memorable leadership role on Xavier’s football and soccer teams, his time playing soccer at Loyola University, traveling to Guatemala to practice global medicine, and his current position as an emergency medicine and pediatric resident, NRP, and Sim Lab Instructor at Indianapolis University of Medicine. His father, Dennis Martin, accepted the award on his behalf.

Shea was recognized for his participation in various service organizations in several countries, his role as Country Director for Vietnam and Cambodia for the American Red Cross, aiding in the starvation, medical, and poverty crises, and his work as a marine biologist. Shea died in 2017 due to paralysis complications after a bike ride in California. His brother, Rob Shea (R79), accepted the award on his behalf.

“Hearing the stories, like Ed’s, and the impact that the people from the Xavier community had is really amazing,” Xavier Director of Development, Mary Harken, said. “It is neat to see how we are all out there changing the world.”

Winker was congratulated for his work as a coach and faculty member for Catholic schools, his role as Xavier’s Activities Director, where he earned 30 state titles, his current job as a lecturer at the University of Iowa in the Sports & Recreation Management program, and for his continued support of Xavier.

“I am grateful to each and every coach and moderator that I had the opportunity to work with; they made me look good,” Winker said. “I am grateful that many of these people were also mentors, co-workers and most importantly, friends for a lifetime. I especially want to thank and recognize Craig Kadlec, Tom Lilly and Duane Schulte.”

Winter was awarded for her involvement in winning the 2003, 2004, and 2006 soccer state championships, her large role in the basketball 2004 and 2006 state championships, her soccer career at Drake University, for becoming a partner in her wealth management advisor investment career at U.S. Bancorp Investments, and her work as a former coach of the Xavier girls’ soccer team.

All of the inductees would like to thank the Xavier community for the honors given to them and remind everyone to go out and make a change.
