Brand new Taylor

Brand new Taylor

Many would agree Taylor Swift won the hearts of middle school girls with her first album, Taylor Swift. Swift then followed up with other classics such as Fearless and Red. Recently, Swift released her newest album, Reputation. As a Swifty from day one, I was more than let down.

Swift began with the release of the single, “Look What You Made Me Do.”  While listening, I could not help but notice the dark and crazy ex-girlfriend turn she has taken. This song specifically discusses her numerous feuds with other celebrities, including Katy Perry. I was shocked by the aggressive nature of the album after Swift’s long hiatus. One particular quote, “I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me,” shows Taylor has enemies and a dark past she is trying to portray to her audience.

The album next goes into “Call It What You Want.” This is the only true love song on the album. It discusses the problems that she has had and how a boy has helped her with them. Swift is known for always having a boy on her arm; this song shows she recognizes the hate she gets for her past songs and relationships.

The final song that stuck out to me was “…Ready For It?” As usual, the lyrics are based on her life. This song comes on too strong for Swift’s style. She begins with sounding like the sad girl next door and transitions to the queen bee who has no regards for her next love.

Overall, this album was not Swift’s best work. She is becoming too dark and petty in all of her songs. Lately she sounds like the complete opposite of her first album, where she had great success. I would give Reputation a 4/10. As a Swifty, I hope the next album stays true to what Taylor Swift started out as.
