Modern vs. Classic

There are many debates on whether or not new era movies are better than older movies. Older movies are superior because the quality of newer movies has been damaged by the greediness of Hollywood. Hollywood is more focused on making movies that bring in the most money, rather than movies that are good quality.

The first example of this is constant reboots. Most people agree that reboots rarely live up to their predecessors. The creators are just trying to bank off of the original’s success. A great example of this is Terminator Genisys (2015), which was a failed attempt to start a new trilogy in the vastly popular Terminator series from the nineties. It garnered a mere 38 out of 100 on Metacritic. It was a mindless, CGI filled mess, with no heart put into it like the originals. Another example of a mediocre reboot is RoboCop (2014). This reboot was an insult to the violent, but cleverly funny original from 1987. It involved no dark humor like the original, and spewed garbage CGI action scenes. The acting was also pitiful, excluding Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson.

Reboots suck the time and money out of Hollywood and starve it of quality projects, such as original movies. Many studios are mainly focused on low effort projects, such as reboots with a little modern flare added. Reboots are insults to original, critically acclaimed movies, such as the original Star Wars trilogy, the National Lampoon’s movies, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory we saw before the 2000’s. The 2000’s still had plenty of quality films such as The Book of Eli (2009) and Watchmen (2008), but after those movies I could only consider two movies to be on my favorite movies list.

Another reason old movies are better is because kids’ movies today lack an actual story. Apart from the few Disney movies released in a year, kids’ movies sell out to trends that will catch the attention of the kids. Minions (2015) did not have an actual story and was an attempt to bank off the Minion craze created by the Despicable Me series. The same thing goes for The Emoji Movie (2017). No quality writing or comedy was put into that movie; it was an atrocious act of banking off the popularity of emojis. Horrible acting, writing, and lifeless animation is common in today’s movies.

The majority of kids’ movies before 2000 could be enjoyed by all ages, such as the old Disney movies. They were beautifully animated, had great voice acting, and had engaging stories that taught valuable lessons, unlike today’s kids’ movies.

The quality of older movies alone is not what makes them better, it is the lack of quality in newer movies due to greed that makes old movies superior.
